Stand for the Controversial Artworks

This is a very hot trending issue for now especially for Filipino people, artists and as a Christian. The Catholic groups threatened to take legal acts against CCP unless it closes the controversial art exhibit – which includes a crucifix with a phallic symbol. Some controversial artworks in the exhibit called “Kulo” are images of Jesus Christ and Virgin Mary which were adorned with objects not related to Christianity. However, they stand by the legitimacy of the exhibit that features works of some 30 artists from the UST and said that it promotes intelligent debate. In my part, I see nothing wrong with the works, exhibit but on the contrary, I think many Christian people especially catholic are hurt by that freedom of expression so to speak. There’s nothing wrong in expressing oneselve’s but limitations should always prevail. It’s our part to be aware of our limits because this might be one of the reasons of causing pain to others.  I guess, the place is the right one to conduct exhibits and to display their freedom of expression. It’s not basically displayed in a mall or in a church or even in the streets and so forth. But the fact, that some Christians can see those exhibits, thus, there reaction is normal after seeing those displays.

I do not condemn the artist because I know that it is how they see and express themselves, it’s a matter of how you understands and interprets their pieces and that’s their perspectives in life. Some would say that they are weird in terms of thinking and imagining things beyond what could be imagine as a normal person. But, I respect them because without their works – arts, paints, drawings, sculpts, or they called there obra or masterpiece, people also would not see or not notice the reality of what’s happening in our society. I am a Christian but I praise also the artworks of the artists. They have such an amazing talent when it comes to interpreting and imagining things. But as a Christian as well, we all have to respect one’s opinions. For me, artist should also know their limits in interpreting one thing or idea especially when that interpretation could hurt others feelings.  Even if you’re a catholic or not, you should always look the possibility of your artwork whether it may hurt or offend people, and desecrate beliefs. And even if I’m not a Christian, if I may say so, I would still respect others opinion regarding this matter. We may differ in our beliefs but we are still people and so we must respect and love each one’s views.
